save water while washing your hands

Chances are you know by now that you shouldn't run the tap while you're brushing your teeth, but what about while you're washing your hands?

The average person washes her hands between six and nine times each day. Say it takes you 2 minutes each time to wash, that's 12-18 minutes at the sink each day just for hand washing. It takes barely any time to wet your hands under the faucet, but while you're scrubbing, two to three gallons of water per minute is going unused down the drain. Let's math it out!

2 gallons per minute X 12 minutes = 24 gallons of water per day

2 gallons per minute X 18 minutes = 36 gallons of water per day

By just turning off the faucet while you scrub, you can save 24-36 gallons of water every single day. That's 8,700 to 13,000 gallons every single year!
